The Brighton International Arts Festival kicks off a week early (unofficially) with three performances of a new drama written, directed and composed by Andy Smith, and performed by Nick Edmett.

“Irving by Gaslight” is on Friday 29, Saturday 30 April, and Sunday 1 May.

This monodrama is based on the life of Henry Irving, the famous 19th Century actor/manager and the first actor in Britain to be knighted. You can read more about the play on its FaceBook page.

Admission is £6 adults, £4 concessions

Café serving light refreshments will be open from 7.30 each evening. Performances start at 8pm and run to 9.15 without an interval.

 

Louise Paul returns to the Hanover Centre by popular demand with a willow weaving workshop on Friday 10th June, 10am to 5pm.

You will be able to make platters for fruit or bread or shallow round baskets in traditional English weave.

The workshop costs £25 which includes all materials. Please bring a sharp penknife and sharp secateurs, wire cutters or similar, a water spray bottle, a cloth to cover your work and refreshments.

Start the New Year in a new way! Come along to the ever popular and unique Art for Women course at the Hanover Centre. During ten weekly evening workshops you will have a chance to experiment with a variety of media, including textiles, painting, clay and plaster, think about everyday modern life and make a panel for the “Hanoveux Tapestry” which will be on display during May.

Also: 20th century still life, tone and form, art appreciation, simple sculptures and complicated collages. Always fun, no experience necessary.

Ten Tuesday evenings from 8pm to 10pm in the Upper Hall, Hanover Centre, from Tuesday 18th January.

Fees: £75 full   £60 part time earners   £40 concessions.

Catching the Sun (on Friday January 21st at 7.30pm) is an “energy extravaganza” at the Hanover Centre to cover three topics:

• Where can you get the best deals for buying renewable electricity from energy companies?
• No roof? then we have Brighton Energy Co-operative setting our your options to invest in an exciting community venture for producing solar energy in Brighton.

We’ll be joined by solar energy installation experts, representatives from the Brighton Energy Co-operative, and local people with experience of solar installations and renewable electricity deals. You’ll get the chance to ask questions directly, so come along and pick the brains of experts and people in Hanover who have already make the first steps on the way to more sustainable energy.

The 2010 Festive Fair was a great success. There were plenty of opportunities for picking up last minute presents, lots of children got a present from Santa himself, Spots versus Stripes got us all playing games, and Hanover Christmas Trees did brisk business in the garden.

The workshops are at the Hanover Centre on Saturday 4th December at 1.30pm and 3.30pm, adults £7 and accompanied children £3.50.

Call for submissions from Hanover artists – deadline 15th December 2010

An opportunity to exhibit work in the Hanover Centre during the May 2011 Art Trail!!

Selected artists will not pay a fee, but will be asked to commit to the loan of one artwork for exhibition at the Centre throughout the following 12 months, and 10% commission on any sales.

Please deliver images of your work, hard copy photos or digital images, with sizes and your contact details clearly marked, to the Hanover Centre by December 15th.  Selection will take place in early January.

Are you interested in running workshops during January to March, which could then result in completed works being exhibited alongside the visual artists in May 2011? Please contact The Hanover Centre to enquire further.

Our 23rd Annual Hanover Beer Festival was another triumph, thanks to Iain and all our wonderful volunteers, generous sponsors, supportive suppliers and happy festival-goers.

This year’s top talking point had to be the weather. It rained throughout the run-up, and by Thursday afternoon we’d reached the point where we’d have to impose a “wellies or waders” dress code if we couldn’t get rid of the large puddle that had formed in a dip in the garden.

Iain came up with a site rescue plan and ordered tonnes of scalpings for delivery Friday morning. A call went out for people and wheelbarrows to help shift them, and a selection of Hanover heroes – Rob, Richard, Si, Simon and Ian – stepped in to help Iain. All of them deserve medals.

By opening time on Friday evening no-one was going to let torrential rain and stormy winds get in the way of raising funds for their top Hanover charity and on Saturday just before closing time all records were broken as one lucky punter was served with the very last pint of all!

When we’ve paid all the bills we expect to have raised £6,000. Thank you, Hanover!
